Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% of the population in abject poverty. Since the slave revolution in 1804, Haitians have not had a successful government or economy. In recent years Haiti has been vulnerable to damage from tropical storms, earthquakes and deforestation. Because of this, the transportation and agricultural sectors have been severely damaged, the government relies on formal international economic assistance, and households rely on remittances as the primary source of foreign exchange.

In the recent wake of the 2010 earthquake, three million people were left homeless and forced to live in temporary shelters where they lack food, clean water, and basic needs. Many of the women and young girls have been left vulnerable to sexual attack, and the redevelopment process has been slow.
