Bolivia

Bolivia is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America, and has suffered through over 190 revolutions and coups since its independence in 1825. In the early 2000s Bolivia experienced political instability, racial tensions, and violent protests. Economic inequality has increased the racial tensions between those of European descent and the impoverished Mestizos and indigenous peoples who make up 85% of the population.

Literacy among the indigenous is much lower. They have lower income generating capability, and one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Most of the indigenous population lives in isolated rural areas, with little access to basic services such as health care or education. In the cities, they often face racism.

Bolivia is the world's third-largest cultivator and producer of cocaine. Despite trying to control drug cultivation, weak border controls and money-laundering policies have helped fuel Bolivia's narcotics trade industry.
