Afghanistan

Afghanistan is an extremely poor and underdeveloped country. Its living standards are among the lowest in the world. Years of civil war and conflict has left the population suffering from shortages of housing, clean water, electricity, medical care, and jobs. Only a fifth of the population has access to clean drinking water, the life expectancy is only 44 years, and the literacy rate is 28% (18% among women). Since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, the economy has been infused with international assistance; however, government instability poses a threat to future economic growth. Out of 182 countries, Afghanistan ranks next to last on the United Nations' Human Development Index.

For centuries, Afghan women have been denied rights. Under Taliban rule, women were forbidden to work, receive an education, or leave the house without a male escort. Since the fall of the Taliban, women have been allowed to return back to work, and burqa's are no longer required. However, the repression of women is still prevalent, and numerous schools for girls have been burned down. Afghanistan is the world's largest producer of opium, supplying roughly 70% of the world's opium. The opiate trade is the key source of revenue for the Taliban and other antigovernment groups.
